Joseph of Nazareth: A Single-Issue Evangelical?

Dr. Russell Moore, Senior Vice President of Academic Administration and Dean of the School of Theology at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, explains how the fight for the life of unborn children was especially relevant to the earthly father of Jesus Christ.  His flight from the tyrannical Herod puts the gravity of this issue into perspective for us, even two thousand years later.  Though infanticide was given the power of government’s strong arm, Joseph knew of an even stronger arm that would bear him up in his opposition to what was legal and acceptable, even commanded.

It’s a simple reminder that the abortion issue is an issue that cannot be “re-tiered.”  The fact that many today would have fought for Mary’s right to abort says a lot about the nature of this debate.  It is rooted in the serpent’s work.  There is no good in abortion.  It’s end is death, which ought to be the end of the argument, but unfortunately it is not.

As Dr. Moore explains, there must be men and women who are like Joseph, people who fight for the lives of their children.  Remember, Joseph’s fight for his own child’s life had eternal consequences.  The son he fought to protect now stands in Heaven at the Father’s right hand, defending those who have placed their hope in him, and he will return again one day, in the spirit of Joseph, to fight for those who belong to him.
