Greater Is He Who Is In You Than They That Are In The Nude: Why Jesus Is So Much Better Than Porn

When I walked into a corner gas station earlier today I was given at least one thing for free: themagazine opportunity to lust.  I try not to go to certain gas stations where I am certain they sell sleezy half-naked or pornographic magazines.  I am a sinful human, and I am quite certain that given the availablity and the secrecy, my desires may go southward.  It would be all too easy to become a flesh-consumer when I only went in to consume a bag of chips and a soda.  Satan does indeed prowl around, even in the dirty isles of our local food marts.

But today I was riding with another fellow and he stopped by a gas station while we were out.  So I went in to see if I was in the mood for a candy bar and was instead greeted by a nameless body inviting me to sin, much like the seductress from Proverbs 7.  No one was watching me–except the King and Judge of the entire cosmos, of course–and it was only an arm’s length away, and yet, I recoiled at the thought of giving in.  Not because I am a self-righteous man with an image to protect, but because my life has been plucked from the clutches of death by the Righteous Man whose image I now bear.  I was invited to infedility in that moment, to be sure, but there was a greater invitation echoing in my ears: If anyone wants to save his life, he must lose it.  Take up your cross and follow me.

Sex has a lot of appeal.  I realize more and more everyday how absolutely focused I must be if I ever hope to make it to my death bed as a faithful husband and father and believer.  And what’s more, there is no hope of calling young men and women to purity if I cannot keep from falling headfirst into lust and sin myself.  I do not want to leave a legacy of faithlessness.  How many cowards there are in the world who love themselves so much that they cannot stand the thought of parting with their sin, even for their family’s sake.  There is a reason to leave your mother and father–it’s called marriage.  And there is a possibility you may have to forsake your family–Jesus said many mus choose between him or their loved ones.  But to choose porn over progeny?  Only sin could be so deceiving.

In the end, the lady on the magazine will be old and wrinkled and she will have no beauty that we may admire, or any allure to seduce us.  No one who knew her body will know her name.  And all those who gazed at her will give an account to her Creator, who will judge them prehaps with greater condemnation if they do not repent for lusting over his creation.  And my own heart will be judged by the Scriptures: He who looks after a woman to lust over her in his heart is guilty already of adultery.

I do not want to turn my eyes from such images because someone might see me, though this is a good reason.  But the greater reason is because I understand that one day that could be my little girl on the cover if I do not demonstrate a sacrificial love to her that crucifies the flesh with its lust in order to have a greater treasure, who is Christ the Lord.  No nudity can match the glory of this great King, who has crushed the head of the serpent, the one who mocks the good sexuality given to us by God.  Why pursue fleeting pleasure when there is Jesus, the treasure hidden in a field, which, when a man found, he went and sold all that he had so that he could buy the field.  His beauty is not deceiving.  His allure is pure.  His pleasure is all-surpassing.  He gives with no mixture of sin.  He is the King of glory, despite what tiny porn magazines may say.
