Be Nobody (Because Superstars Don’t Get Crucified)

If your goal today is to be somebody, there is a sense in which you are headed toward hell.  None of us can pursue Christ as servanteverything and ourselves as something at the same time.  No one can serve two masters, because he will hate one and love the other.  If Christ is everything–which he must be to us in order to know him–then we cannot be anything, that is, anything special.  Christ is everything; we are nothing.  Not that we don’t exist, or are to pretend as if we don’t (which is a logical and practical impossibility), but we are to pursue Christ as everything to the neglect of bringing any fame or praise to ourselves.

“If anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself” (Galatians 6:3).  Do you think you are something, that is, something special?  Do you think you are somehow different than everyone is a way that demands more attention and praise from others?  If you think you are something special, you deceive yourself.  You are nothing.

Christ gave us an example: “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing .  . .” (Philippians 2:5-7).  Superstars don’t get crucified; losers do.  Of course, Jesus is definitely not a loser, but you couldn’t have convinced his murderers of this, nor could any of us be convinced of this apart from the gracious working of the Holy Spirit in our hearts, through the perfect Word of God.  Jesus became nothing, and calls us to do the same.

So be nobody today.  Be nobody special.  Serve others and, with humility, accept it as a gift when others serve you.  But don’t think you are somebody.  Lucifer thought this, and we know his end is near.  And all of us are tempted to think we are somebody, but this is a grand deception, and if we believe it, we will be cast into outer darkness.  Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:24).  Remember, superstars don’t carry crosses; “nobody” does.
